Building 36
Building 36 is located on the Main Post of the Historic San Francisco Presidio and was constructed in the late 1800s and served many functions for the Army prior to the transition to non-military use. The Presidio Trust retained Huntsman Architectural Group to rehabilitate and seismically retrofit the building for multi-tenant office use as part of the Presidio Trust's General Management Plan. The project needed to meet the Presidio's guidelines for sustainability, the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and the ADA. Historic materials were carefully salvaged and marked and reinstalled wherever they remained intact, while new HVAC and life safety systems were seamlessly integrated. In addition to the use of sustainable materials, a new environmentally-friendly paint removal technology was used in the renovation.
