The redesign journey starts in the reception area, where the concept of vertical volume is introduced through the strategic use of vertical wood slats and the reorientation of an existing stone wall. This initial design language sets the stage for the atrium—transformed into the vibrant heart of the campus. With vertical slats and thoughtful lighting that together celebrate the architectural volume, transforming this space into a dynamic communal hub featuring movable tables that facilitate easy reconfiguration. This versatility allows the space to seamlessly transition between a third workplace to hosting informal gatherings and significant community events.
Addressing the specific needs of those in life sciences, the design incorporates hospitality-inspired areas that provide a comforting escape from structured lab environments. These spaces, with lower lighting and comfortable furniture, enhance relaxation. The redesign also extends to locker rooms and restrooms, which are refreshed with spa-like amenities to further enrich the user experience.
Sustainability was a key focus of the design team, with recycled content and carbon-neutral products prioritized in material selection. This sustainable ethos is carried through to the auditorium and conference center, underscoring the campus's commitment to environmental responsibility. While artwork and decor throughout the campus further embody the fusion of science and nature, with pieces like “Choices,” “Reaching,” and “Into the Unknown” reflect the scientific journey.
This redesign at ISTP not only reshapes the physical space but also creates a more enriching and supportive environment for its community, marking a new chapter in the campus’s evolution.
