Global Technology Company Fairchild
To attract and retain a growing number of employees, this Global Technology Company increased its leased real estate portfolio by expanding outside its headquarters campus in Mountain View. The design of the new space reflects the client’s goals for a flexible, open, collaborative work environment where the end users’ comfort, health and well-being are of utmost importance. Since the buildings are located off-campus, a key project goal was to attract users to the space by providing them with resources and amenities similar to those offered on-campus. The design team developed a visual narrative that reduces the large scale of the buildings into camp-site vignettes on each floor and in each building. In addition to open work areas and informal meeting spaces, there are various amenity spaces, such as a full service cafeteria, fitness center, wellness center, game rooms, and cafes.
The interior layout was adapted from what was previously closed rooms for research and development use into an open, dynamic environment. The project scope also included building upgrades such as mechanical system replacements and the addition of skylights to increase day-lighting. In alignment with its holistic approach to design and the end users’ well-being, the client is pursuing LEED-CI Gold certification for this project, as well as requiring that all materials in the selected finishes and furniture comply with the Living Building Challenge’s Red List restricting products with known harmful chemicals.
