Caltrans Transportation Laboratory
Caltrans' TransLab is an innovative facility in the broad field of materials engineering, research and environmental analysis. Through its specialized laboratory offices, TransLab provides the various districts with expertise in geology, transportation materials engineering, geotechnical engineering and specialized testing and field investigation services. Huntsman with its multi-disciplined consultant team conducted an infrastructure study of building systems that include civil/site, structural, HVAC and controls, plumbing, lighting, fire alarm/security, electrical distribution, fire protection and architectural systems investigation. The study was divided into a series of task orders, of which, the first few were prepared based on the results of the remaining 10- and 50-year useful life of the facilities with cost breakdowns for repairs. Later task orders included a hazardous materials study of the three main buildings and preliminary environmental studies related to the potentially historic architecture. Environmental documentation includes fieldwork, site alternatives and analyses, and an environmental impact report for the future campus.
The team also performed an economic analysis which recommends to Caltrans an optimum long-term space solution, based on workload projections, staffing, functions and adjacencies detailed in an initial design charrette.
