Founded in July 2004 as an affiliate of the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company, KKR Financial Corporation is a diversified real estate investment trust and specialty finance company. Reflecting the business travel aesthetic of the firm’s partners, the new KKR headquarters was designed to simulate the look of a five-star hotel more than it does a typical office. Furniture is built-in and equipment is concealed in custom-designed cabinets to hide technology and keep the focus on conversation and ideas. Entertaining plays a significant role in the firm’s business, therefore conference rooms adjacent to the reception area are designed to feel more like executive lounges. The color palette was kept neutral and subdued, while the fabric palette is rich, with many walls upholstered in leather. Occasional bursts of color keep the space active and the circulation and view corridors are carefully planned to take advantage of the stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and the city.
