One Union Square
Lobby Renovation and Accessibilty Upgrades
San Francisco, CA

After One Union Square, a modern retail building, received a notice of violation with 117 access compliance features, including primary entrances for five retail tenants, Huntsman Architectural Group was brought on to provide consulting services. The design team devised a solution to provide equivalent facilitation in the form of a new primary entrance and lobby for the building and made a successful appeal to the Access Appeal Commission (AAC). This resulted in an expanded lobby, including new ramps, entry, and a stainless steel and glass canopy. The project incorporates custom stone, metal, and millwork to meet the criteria of the AAC. A very restricted space within a reinforced concrete structure required careful coordination of all trades and meticulous detailing and fabrication of all custom design elements. Extensive phasing and temporary construction maintained tenant and customer access during construction. The solution offers better facilitation than the code required, without disfiguring the building, and with significantly less expense.
