The Wakefield Building
Seismic Retrofit and Historic Building Renovation
Oakland, CA

Damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake, the 1920s era high-rise in downtown Oakland required a seismic strategy that would incorporate ADA, life safety code, and mechanical/electrical upgrades and also provide flexibility for tenant planning. Huntsman worked closely with the Oakland Planning, Building and Fire Departments to address code improvements while maximizing tenant functionality within the historic structure. An innovative exiting solution addressed life-safety code requirements, while preserving the building’s historic fabric. All new life safety, electrical, and mechanical systems were provided to ready the building for individual tenant projects. Windows on the non-historic elevations were replaced with energy efficient glazing systems. New restrooms and elevator lobbies were designed to maintain the historic stairwell, while providing for ADA and other code requirements.
