117 Post Street
Seismic Retrofit
San Francisco, CA

Redesigned as a West Coast flagship for a major bookseller, the historic high-rise at 117 Post Street was seismically retrofitted to accommodate the tenant’s retail program. An atypical building configuration and the installation of a new structural system required the interior of this 1908 building to be gutted. A combination of braced frames and concrete shear-wall construction proved to be the most cost-effective lateral strengthening system for the tall, narrow structure. As the local architect and Architect of Record collaborating with an East Coast design firm, Huntsman Architectural Group coordinated all aspects of the project during its fast-track delivery. This included environmental services, demolition, building redesign, new building engineering systems, construction documents, bidding and construction supervision.
