Programming and Interior Design for Historic Renovation
Riverside, CA

in collaboration with The Design Partnership

The goal of this project was to finalize the program for the renovation of the 1933 Courthouse Addition, designed by G. Stanley Wilson, for judicial administrative and support functions, to develop the design and prepare technical drawings and specifications for the work, followed by bidding and construction. With Design Partnership as the prime consultant, Huntsman served as both an interior design and programming consultant and met with the County facilities management, Court user groups and the executive planning committee to review a Space Data Base, developed by the County in September 2002. The goal of the meetings were to verify that the Space Data Base program components will support future needs for staff of approximately 135 and space requirements to the year 2005.

The scope of work also consisted of interior space improvements for a variety of court administrative and support functions. The primary departments and user groups include the Presiding Judge, Court Executive, Judicial Conference, Judicial Library, Civil and Probate Clerks, Arbitration/Mediation, Human Resources, Accounting, Legal Research, Public Service and Assistance centers, exhibits and some central files storage. The total area programmed in former studies exceeded the available floor area of the 1933 Addition.

The project also provides technical upgrades to the building, including seismic reinforcement; mechanical and plumbing system improvements; electrical power and lighting systems upgrades; provision for expanded data and telephone systems; and fire and life safety system improvements.
