CSU East Bay Main Library
Seismic Retrofit Study and Programming
Hayward, CA

The California State University East Bay University Library Building is part of a complex that includes the main administrative building, Warren Hall, and a bridge connecting the two structures. The 250,000 square foot facility was constructed circa 1970 and requires structural retrofit to meet current seismic standards as well as replacement of out-moded infrastructure and re-design to meet current library facility requirements. Huntsman led a team of architects, engineers, specialists and cost estimators to develop a multi-faceted library building feasibility study that includes an assessment of the existing facility and recommendations, development of a seismic retrofit approach, programming for the library and other departments currently housed in the library, development of retrofit projects (including phasing, budgets and schedules) and the design for expanded library facilities.

The programming includes the University Library Program, documentation of the existing non-Library departments currently located within the Library building, and additional departments that may be housed within the Building as part of long-term goals. A three-dimensional model showing conceptual signature design elements will be used for fund-raising purposes. The first phase of the project is estimated at approximately $45 million and includes seismic retrofit, re-planning of interior functions, and the construction of a moveable accessible compact shelving system in order to allow for collection expansion and to make way for additional digital media and collaborative learning spaces.
