Presidio Building 220
Historic Renovation
San Francisco, CA
Located on the Main Post of the historic Presidio, Building 220 was constructed in the early 1900’s and served as a school for bakers and cooks. As part of their General Management Plan, the Presidio Trust retained Huntsman Architectural Group to design the building renovation for multi-tenant office use. Undertaken simultaneously with the Building 36 renovation, the project included establishing finish material and energy efficiency standards based on the Presidio’s guidelines for sustainability. Existing concrete floors were restored rather than covered with new product. Existing non-conforming historical handrails were maintained and supplemented with new conforming elements. An energy efficient and ergonomic design employed indirect lighting throughout the building, remaining sensitive to the historic spaces. The design also complied with the Secretary of Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
