Sierra Point Tower
New High-Rise Office Building
Brisbane, CA
Huntsman's concept for a new office tower at Sierra Point enhances the existing campus environment by creating a more dramatic grouping of high-rises. The building location establishes a hierarchy between the three adjacent high-rises (the newer building being the tallest and closest to the freeway). The new building's orientation maximizes bay views to the north and southern exposure. Direct western exposure has been minimized to reduce solar heat gain and glare. The north façade incorporates curved tinted vision glazing, opaque glass and metal spandrel panels, and a sweeping facade that extends beyond the building corner to accentuate the curvilinear form. The south façade incorporates pre-cast concrete similar to the existing buildings, recessed horizontal windows and sun shades to provide summer sun shading.
The base of the new building relates to the adjacent parking structures and provides a visually solid element upon which the tower is anchored. Parking is integrated into the design as an overall part of the composition, providing a rusticated masonry podium. This aesthetically screens the parking structures behind an articulated façade.
The plaza allows for limited vehicular access around the building, but is intended as a continuous paved and landscaped pedestrian area. The plaza is designed to be constructed separately from the adjacent parcel, or to continue across if the adjacent property becomes part of the overall site enhancement.
The lobby design is a spacious, glass-enclosed space accessible from multiple points of entrance and as a continuation of the outdoor plaza space. The glazed enclosure is recessed and the building is cantilevered above to create a dramatic focal point upon accessing the site and building from the north or when entering along the south edge of the building.
