Marin Biologic, a contract research laboratory benefitting the pharmaceutical industry, realized its need for a number of upgrades to their working conditions and spatial requirements that had gone overlooked during a period of firm growth. Deciding to relocate, Marin Biologic retained Huntsman to develop space plans and the design for its new laboratory in a building formerly utilized as a bank. The building renovation and interior tenant improvements were to support laboratories, a GMP lab, class 100 tissue culture lab rooms, support spaces, offices and conference rooms. The conversion required the design and installation of new electrical, HVAC systems and process piping.
Key elements to the success of the project included instituting an early platform of open communication for better coordination of consultants involved, value engineering and exploring alternative design approaches to keep costs down, and assessing laboratory functions and creating new adjacencies that allowed for a more organized working condition and lowered operating costs.
