Internet Media Company
For this Internet media company, expanding the physical footprint of its campus provided an opportunity to affirm its own identity as a media powerhouse. With leasing a nearby six-story building, the client set clear project goals: to put San Bruno on the map as the company’s global headquarters and to create a space that is unique to its brand - one that is edgy, urban, and youthful. One of the obvious planning challenges was to establish connectivity between the six floors. The design team employed a functional kit of parts that distributes amenities throughout the building as destinations. The project team conceived of a dynamic media wall to reflect six content verticals (news, entertainment, music, sports, kids and family, and gaming). On each floor, the content verticals are reflected in a unique and interactive way in the break areas, while mural walls and floor stencils quote famous online videos. The overarching design concept is based on urban renewal with base building features like exposed ceilings and concrete floors creating a raw canvas against which these themed elements pop out as cinematic sets.
To comply with the Living Building Challenge’s Red List which restricts products with known harmful chemicals, the design team researched materials and furniture to add to the client’s master product database. Establishing functionality, building performance, wellness, and brand identity goals for this evolving campus was truly a collaborative exercise, ultimately setting a new precedent in the level of interaction. Together, it resulted in a workplace where employees thrive and the company’s media presence comes to life.
